SHOCK SERVICING
To keep your Nitron dampers working at their optimum we
recommend you return them for servicing every once in a while.
How often depends on the use of the car and how critical the
performance of the suspension is to the individual, for example
for race use we would recommend the shocks be rebuilt every
year, for ordinary road use perhaps with the occasional track
day every two years would be fine. Indeed we have received kits
that have covered many miles over several years and once given a
thorough rinse still test up well on the dyno!
The reason for rebuilding dampers is that their performance will start to
deteriorate from the moment they are fitted. As the piston rod assembly moves
frantically within the body tube the metallic components begin to wear down, and
maybe tiny particles of dirt are ingested past the rod seals. This is of course
an extremely slow process, but the result over many miles of driving and
millions of damper shaft movements is that the oil will become black with these
particles, in just the same way that the oil in your car turns black over time.
This hinders the flow of the oil through the various ports and so reduces the
damping efficiency. The viscosity of the oil is likely to have changed also,
shock oil from tired dampers runs very thin compared with fresh.
Here is a breakdown of the work undertaken during the rebuilding
of an NTR Sport kit:
- Full wash down in chemical cleaner tank
- Fully disassemble dampers, thoroughly clean and degrease
individual components to be reused
- Replace all rod seals
- Replace damper shims
- Replace all critical o-ring seals
- Refill with fresh shock oil
- Re-gas with Nitrogen to specified pressure
- Reassemble with cleaned springs and bearing spacers with new
o-rings
- Reset customer damper and spring preload settings
The price to rebuild a single-adjustable NTR Sport damper is £65
per unit excluding VAT. For remote reservoir shocks the charge
is £90 per shock. These are the basic prices excluding
non-standard rebuild parts. Examples of additional parts that
are sometimes required would be the piston rod, this is often
due to stone chips that could cause a seal failure, the price of
a piston rod is £15. Another would be the spherical bearings at
each end of the shock, these can become slack and could cause
noise, replacement bearings are £5 each.
All Nitron shocks come with a 1 year warranty, this will be
extended for another year if the kit is rebuilt after a year,
and so on.
If you wish to send your dampers in for refurbishment then
please ensure you enclose your full details so we can contact
you at any time. Please mark your parcels for the attention of
the Servicing Department. |
